Swimming is a vital life skill that opens up a world of fun and safety in water environments. At Col Jones Swim Tempe, we’ve crafted a progression pathway that guides young swimmers through each stage of their development. Whether just starting out or refining competitive skills, each level is designed to build confidence and ability.

Our facility features three distinct pools, each tailored to different skill levels. Kids begin their journey in the warm and shallow waters of the Small Beginner Pool, perfect for mastering fundamentals.

As they grow more confident, they transition to the Teaching Improver Pool, where they start to build on basic skills with more structured training. Finally, the 25-metre Lap Pool becomes their arena for perfecting advanced techniques and engaging in squad training, preparing them for competitive swimming.

Our approach focuses on skill-building and fostering a love for swimming. By maintaining a supportive and fun environment, we help young swimmers develop at their own pace, build vital skills, and gain a lifelong appreciation for the water.

Beginner Swim Level: Starting with Confidence

The Beginner Swim Level at Col Jones Swim Tempe lays a strong foundation for young swimmers by introducing essential water safety concepts and basic swimming skills.

At this stage, children learn to float and feel comfortable in water, which is critical for their confidence. Safety comes first, as instructors emphasise the importance of recognising safe swimming zones and understanding how to respond in unexpected situations.

Our small beginner pool plays a crucial role in creating an ideal learning environment. This pool is designed with young learners in mind, with a shallow, warm setting that reassures children as they get accustomed to water.

The friendly surroundings and supportive instructors help children gain trust in their abilities and in the water itself.

The main goals for this level include:

  • Gaining Water Confidence: Children learn to stay relaxed and feel safe in the pool.
  • Mastering Floating: Young swimmers are taught to float independently, building essential water skills.
  • Understanding Water Safety Basics: Kids begin to learn about water safety rules and the importance of supervision.

These foundational elements ensure that young swimmers start their journey with the right skills and a sense of security.

Improver Swim Level: Building on Basics

Once swimmers gain confidence in the Beginner Swim Level, they are ready to move on to the Teaching Improver Pool. This next phase is more about building on what they have already learned and developing new skills that set the groundwork for more advanced swimming. The pool's design encourages them to refine their movements and experiment with new techniques in a supportive setting.

At this stage, key skills such as breathing techniques and the introduction to basic strokes come into play. Children begin to learn how to breathe properly while swimming, a crucial skill for more complex strokes. They also start practising movements like freestyle and backstroke, getting accustomed to the rhythm and coordination needed for efficient swimming.

Here’s what makes the Improver Swim Level important:

  • Breathing Techniques: Teaching swimmers how to breathe effectively while swimming.
  • Basic Strokes Introduction: Introducing and practising swimming strokes.
  • Building Confidence: Helping kids feel more at ease in deeper water and with more complex tasks.

This level is designed to help swimmers transition smoothly from basic skills to more structured training, preparing them for the next stages of their swimming journey. Through patient guidance and consistent practice, children develop not just technique but also the confidence to face new challenges.

Advanced Swim Level: Mastery and Techniques

The Advanced Swim Level focuses on refining form strokes and enhancing endurance. This stage builds on the foundational skills learned in earlier levels and demands more precision and stamina. Swimmers concentrate on mastering strokes like butterfly and backstroke, improving their efficiency and speed in the water.

The 25-Metre Lap Pool plays a critical role in this development phase. It's the perfect setting for technique refinement and drill practise. Regular swim drills not only enhance stroke execution but also boost swimmer confidence. Each training session is designed to challenge swimmers, encouraging them to execute strokes with accuracy and reach new personal bests.

Regular practice is key at this level. It helps swimmers overcome common challenges such as fatigue and coordination difficulties. With continuous effort and dedication, swimmers can expect to see significant improvements in their overall performance and endurance. The advanced level is where commitment and hard work truly pay off, setting them up for success in more competitive scenarios.

Squad Training: Competitive Edge and Teamwork

Transitioning from learning to competitive swimming requires focus on teamwork and discipline. Squad training provides this, blending individual skill enhancement with collective team spirit. Swimmers learn not only to race but to support each other, understanding the importance of cooperation and strategy in competitive swimming.

Squad training prepares swimmers for swim meets by simulating race conditions. It covers competitive skills like starts, turns, and pacing. Regular participation helps swimmers identify their strengths and areas for improvement. The thrill of competing together builds a sense of belonging and boosts morale, driving swimmers to push their limits and achieve their goals.

Environmental considerations also play a part in squad training. Lessons on sustainability, such as using resources wisely, are integral. Our energy-efficient practices ensure the training environment adheres to eco-friendly standards, fostering awareness among young athletes.

Engaging with the community strengthens teamwork and highlights the significance of working together towards a shared vision for a greener future.
