Alegria Performing Arts
Ballet, jazz and contemporary classes for children, teenagers and adults
Alegria Performing Arts is overseen by Alegria Dance Studios and offers ballet-led training in a fun and friendly environment for children, teenagers and adults, with opportunities to explore jazz and contemporary classes as students grow.
Classes are grouped by age and stage of development, with teachers advising further in consultation with parents in response to each child’s level of skill, development and interests.
Toddlers | 2–3 years
Toddlers learn to move freely to the music, expressing various moods and dynamics. They gain awareness of their legs, feet, arms, hands, fingers, head and torso moving separately and in coordination in expressive imaginative story-telling. They also get a gentle workout with walking, running, jumping and turning to the music, while learning to dance and move with other children in the class.
3–4 years
Children are introduced to ballet through music and rhythm, dancing in groups, simple clapping, walks and jumps. Any natural ability to move in time to the music is encouraged and developed, while children build awareness of their body, musical beats and changing dynamics. They also begin to make patterns as they move with other children and learn how to greet the teacher at the beginning of class and thank them at the end.
5 years
Children learn to articulate their limbs and joints, achieve smooth movements, walk, run and balance in time to the music, and begin to gallop, spin and skip. They also learn how to count and clap at the right time and to tell their own imaginative stories through mime to music.
6 years
Children continue building on the foundations of Pre-Primary and begin to coordinate arms and head, learn marches, jumps and springs, and work through longer sequences of steps such as gallops, skips, runs and leaps. They also learn a set story-telling dance to music.
7–11 years
As students move through the graded levels, they build increasing awareness, coordination, musicality and performance quality. They begin to learn more technical ballet movements and combinations, with opportunities to attend jazz and contemporary classes appropriate to their age group. The syllabi emphasise the development of strong ballet technique, musicality and artistry, while encouraging students to express themselves through movement.
Teenagers
Teenagers may join beginner ballet classes or continue into more advanced graded and vocational pathways where appropriate. Classes offered at higher levels may include Intermediate Foundation, Intermediate, Advanced Foundation, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2, with progression based on training and suitability.
Adults
Alegria offers adult beginners and adult experienced ballet classes, together with adult jazz and Pilates options. Adult beginners learn the fundamental balletic principles of lengthened posture, rotation of arms and legs, and alignments front, back and side, while experienced adults explore more complex dynamics and movements in the centre to inspiring music.
